UCSF Moffit Long, Radiology Department, San Francisco, California
THE TEAM: Perkins Eastman, San Francisco, California
THE MUSE: Hospitals needn't evoke fear but rather embody spaces of healing. In the UCSF radiology department, we've crafted an environment synonymous with ease. Drawing inspiration from the city's enveloping fog, the design incorporates a recurring motif of horizontal flowing lines. Illuminated by gentle lights and adorned with warm woods and gradient blues, the space emanates serenity and tranquility, fostering a comforting atmosphere for both healthcare professionals and patients.
THE MAGIC: The gradient blue panels backlit at waiting areas and reception desks create a moment of disruption for the patients’ worries. The vibrant blue cascading into a soft blue is both bold and calming and helps direct patients to meander through the space without feeling lost and confused.
THE MAVERICK MOVE: Deviating from the conventional image of sterile and impersonal hospitals, our design welcomes patients into a transformative space. As patients enter, they are greeted by a warm ambiance, guided by a wood slat ceiling and travertine-look porcelain flooring. The waiting area, adorned with frosted glass interwoven with creamy fabric strips, filters light to create a gentle and inviting glow, offering a departure from the traditional clinical atmosphere.
